What the Florida exam looks like

Florida’s exam is the longest in the country: no state asks more than 50 questions. You need 80% to pass, which means you can miss 10 questions and still get your permit. There is no time limit, so read every question twice.

The exam is given by the FLHSMV (Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles). Its questions come from the official Florida driver’s handbook, which is also where every DMV Champ question is checked.

The same format is used in Michigan, New Jersey, Utah and Wisconsin.

What the Florida handbook says

The Official Florida Driver License Handbook calls it the knowledge exam, so that is the phrase you’ll see at the counter and on the agency’s site. Passing it is how you get a learner’s license, which you can apply for from age 15 in Florida. If you fail, the rule on retaking is: $10 fee per written re-test.
