Practice test

Take a 10-question Wyoming WYDOT practice test

Pick an answer and check it. Every question comes with the reason behind the right answer and the sentence of an official document it rests on.

To pass here you need 8 of 10, since Wyoming’s test asks for 80%.

  1. Question 1 of 10 · Guide and service signs

Blue five-sided sign with a yellow border, the county name above the yellow route number 16 and the word COUNTY below it, on a post beside a narrow country road
You turn off the highway and see this. What road are you on now?
    Show the answer

The answer is D: A county road.

The blue pentagon with yellow numbers marks a county road. The shape and color of a route marker tell you what kind of road you are on. The number is what a map will name. A state route marker is designed by each state, so it looks different from state to state.

“The County Route (M1-6) sign (see Figure 2D-4) shall consist of a pentagon shape with a yellow county name and route number and border on a blue background.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 259
  2. Question 2 of 10 · Highways, merging and exits

Freeway seen from above. An entrance ramp comes in from the right and opens into a lane of its own beside the through lanes. Your car is in the right through lane just before that lane begins. A grey car marked A is on the ramp level with you. One other car is in the left lane some way behind you
Car A is coming down the ramp. What should you do?
    Show the answer

The answer is B: Move over a lane or adjust your speed.

The driver on the ramp has to yield to you, but make room anyway. Move over a lane if it is clear, or ease off a little so a gap opens. Do not brake hard. The driver behind you is doing highway speed and does not expect it.

“Make space for vehicles entering a multiple-lane or limited access roadway by moving over a lane or adjusting your speed.”

AAMVA Model Driver’s License Manual, page 31
  3. Question 3 of 10 · Snow and ice

Side view of a blue car parked at a curb, buried under fresh snow. The roof, hood, trunk, every window and the lights are all covered, and nothing has been cleared. The street beside it is plowed
Before you drive this car, you must clear the snow off ____.
    Show the answer

The answer is C: every window, light and the roof

Clear every window, every light and the mirrors, then the roof and the hood. Snow on the glass hides what is around you, and a light under snow is a signal nobody sees. Snow left on the roof flies off once you are moving and lands on the car behind you.

“Remove snow and ice from your vehicle’s hood, windows and lights before driving.”

    Minnesota Driver's Manual, page 84
  4. Question 4 of 10 · Regulatory signs

Snow covers the face of a sign ahead. Its outline has eight sides. What is it?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: A stop sign.

Only the stop sign is cut with eight sides, so the outline names it when the face cannot. That is why you can read one from behind, in fog or under snow. A yield sign is a triangle on its point, and a speed limit sign is a plain rectangle.

“Shapes that are exclusive to a particular sign (such as an octagon for STOP, a pennant for NO PASSING ZONE, or a circle for Railroad Advance) should not be obscured”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 83
  5. Question 5 of 10 · Railroad crossings

Railroad crossing seen through your windshield, a white stop line across your lane and a single track beyond it. The signal mast at the right carries a crossbuck over a pair of red lights, one of them lit, and has no gate arm. No train is in view
These lights are flashing and there is no gate, so you
    Show the answer

The answer is C: stop and wait until they go out.

Flashing red lights mean a train is coming or still near the crossing. Stop before the tracks and stay there until the lights stop, even if you see no train. A crossing can have lights without a gate, so the lights may be all that holds you back. The crossing is not clear until they stop.

“Flashing-Light Signals—a warning device consisting of two red signal indications arranged horizontally that are activated to flash alternately when rail traffic is approaching or present at a grade crossing.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 58
  6. Question 6 of 10 · Curves and hills

Two-lane country road seen from your car at the top of a long, straight hill. The road drops away steeply ahead for a long way toward a wooded valley, with hills beyond
How should you control your speed down this hill?
    Show the answer

The answer is B: Shift to a lower gear.

Use a lower gear, so the engine helps hold the car back and you use the brakes less. Brakes held down the whole way get very hot and stop working well. Neutral is worse, since then nothing but the brakes slows you, and in many states it is against the law. Most automatics have a low range marked L, 2 or 1.

“A USE LOW GEAR (W7-2P) or TRUCKS USE LOWER GEAR (W7-2bP) supplemental plaque (see Figure 2C-5) may be used to indicate a situation where downshifting as well as braking might be advisable.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 208
  7. Question 7 of 10 · Pavement markings

Street from the driver's seat, your car in the traffic lane, and a narrow lane along the right edge marked off by a solid white line with a bicycle painted inside it
What is the narrow lane on the right for?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: People riding bicycles.

A solid white line with a bicycle symbol marks a bike lane. It belongs to riders, so do not drive or park in it. Near a corner the line usually breaks. That is where you cross it to turn right, after checking for a rider.

“Pavement markings designate that portion of the roadway for preferential use by bicyclists. Markings inform all road users of the restricted nature of the bicycle lane.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 1127
  8. Question 8 of 10 · Seat belts, airbags and car seats

How should you set the driver's seat?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: Upright, about 10 inches from the wheel.

Sit up with your back against the seat and about 10 inches between your chest and the steering wheel. That is the room the air bag needs to open without hitting your face. Do not recline. Leaning back puts the belt in the wrong place on your body and cuts your view.

“There should be 10 inches between your chest and the steering wheel. Do not move the seat so far forward that you cannot easily steer and do not recline the seat.”

AAMVA Model Driver’s License Manual, page 14
  9. Question 9 of 10 · Emergencies and crashes

City street seen from above and behind your car, marked YOU, in stopped traffic. The front of your car is touching the rear bumper of the grey car ahead, which has a small dent where they meet. A red car is stopped ahead of it
You have bumped the car ahead and the dent is small. Must you stop?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: Yes, however small the damage is.

You have to stop at every crash you are in, however small the damage looks. Leaving the scene is a crime, even over a scratch. Once stopped, check that nobody is hurt and call the police if anyone is. If the cars can be driven, move them out of traffic so nobody else crashes into them.

“If you are in a crash, you must stop. The level of damage does not matter. You must stop. It is a traffic violation to leave the scene of an incident, like a traffic crash that involves property damage. It is a criminal violation to leave the scene of an incident that involves a fatality or personal injury.”

New York State Driver's Manual and Practice Tests, page 77
  10. Question 10 of 10 · Parking and stopping

Your car parked at the curb on a street that slopes downhill toward the car's front, seen from the side. Its front wheels are pointing straight ahead, in line with the curb
You are parking here. Which way do you turn the front wheels?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: Toward the curb.

Facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb. If the brakes let go, the car rolls a few inches and the front tire catches the curb. It stops there instead of rolling into the street. Facing uphill the wheels go the other way, so look at the slope before you turn them.

“Headed downhill: Turn your front wheels into the curb or right toward the side of the road.”
