What the Utah test looks like

Utah’s test is the longest in the country: no state asks more than 50 questions. You need 80% to pass, which means you can miss 10 questions and still get your permit. There is no time limit, so read every question twice.

The test is given by the DLD (Utah Driver License Division). Its questions come from the official Utah driver’s handbook, which is also where every DMV Champ question is checked.

The same format is used in Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and Wisconsin.

What the Utah handbook says

The Utah Driver Handbook calls it the written knowledge test, so that is the phrase you’ll see at the counter and on the agency’s site. Passing it is how you get a learner permit, which you can apply for from age 15 in Utah. If you fail, the rule on retaking is: up to two tests per day; the fee covers three attempts within 12 months.
