What the Michigan exam looks like

Michigan’s exam is the longest in the country: no state asks more than 50 questions. You need 80% to pass, which means you can miss 10 questions and still get your permit. There is no time limit, so read every question twice.

The exam is given by the Secretary of State (Michigan Secretary of State). Its questions come from the official Michigan driver’s handbook, which is also where every DMV Champ question is checked.

The same format is used in Florida, New Jersey, Utah and Wisconsin.

What the Michigan handbook says

The Michigan handbook, What Every Driver Must Know, calls it the knowledge test. Passing it is how you get a level 1 learner’s license, which you can apply for from age 14 and 9 months in Michigan. Road signs are tested as a section of their own, so don’t skim the signs chapter.
