Take a 10-question Arkansas permit practice test

Pick an answer and check it. Every question comes with the reason behind the right answer and the sentence of an official document it rests on.

To pass here you need 8 of 10, the 80% DMV Champ’s simulated tests use.

  1. Question 1 of 10 · Traffic signals and arrows

Street seen from your car, with a traffic signal hanging over the intersection ahead. The signal has three round lenses one above the other, and the middle one is lit yellow while the other two are dark. There is a stop line and a crosswalk across your lane, and no other cars
What is this light telling you?
    Show the answer

The answer is B: The light is about to turn red.

A steady yellow light means red is next. It is a warning, not extra green time. Stop if you can do it without a hard brake. Speeding up to beat the red puts you in the intersection just as the cross street gets its green.

“Vehicular traffic facing a steady CIRCULAR YELLOW signal indication is thereby warned that the related green movement or the related flashing arrow movement is being terminated or that a steady red signal indication will be displayed immediately thereafter when vehicular traffic shall not enter the intersection.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 685
  2. Question 2 of 10 · Emergency vehicles and the Move Over law

View through your windshield of a two-lane road with a yellow center line. A fire truck with red lights flashing is coming toward you in the oncoming lane. There is no median and no other traffic
Must you pull over for this fire truck?
    Show the answer

The answer is B: Yes. Pull to the right and stop.

You yield to an emergency vehicle coming from any direction, not only from behind. With no median between you, the driver may need your side of the road to get around traffic. Pull right, stop, and wait until it has passed. Drifting toward the center line takes away the room it needs.

“You must pull over and stop for an emergency vehicle even if it is headed toward you in the opposite lane of a two-way roadway.”

New York State Driver's Manual and Practice Tests, page 35
  3. Question 3 of 10 · Snow and ice

A snowstorm has stranded your car. What do you do while you wait for help?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: Stay in the car and make it easy to see.

Stay with your car. It is shelter, and a search crew finds a car far more easily than a person on foot. Most deaths in a snowstorm happen to people who leave the vehicle and get lost. Turn on the hazard lights and tie something bright to the antenna or a door handle.

“If you become stranded while traveling in cold weather, stay with your vehicle. Most deaths in these situations occur when people leave their vehicles, become lost and suffer prolonged exposure to the cold.”

    Minnesota Driver's Manual, page 85
  4. Question 4 of 10 · Guide and service signs

Blue shield-shaped sign with a red band across the top carrying the word INTERSTATE, and the white route number 22 on the blue, on a post beside a freeway
What kind of road carries this marker?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: An interstate highway.

The red, white and blue shield marks an interstate highway. Its number is the route to follow, not a speed limit or a distance. A U.S. route wears a black and white shield, and a county road a blue pentagon.

“Interstate Route (M1-1 and M1-1a) signs (see Figure 2D-4) shall be used on all Interstate routes and in connection with Route Sign assemblies on intersecting highways.”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 257
  5. Question 5 of 10 · Lane use and changing lanes

Highway from the driver's seat with traffic stopped ahead in both lanes. To the right of your lane a solid white line runs along the edge, and beyond it a wide paved shoulder is empty
What is the paved strip beyond the white line for?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: Stopping in an emergency.

That strip is the shoulder. It is for a car that has to stop, not for driving or passing, paved or not. Nobody expects a car there, so a driver ahead may pull onto it without looking. A sign tells you if a shoulder is open to traffic at busy times.

“Shoulder—a longitudinal area contiguous with the traveled way that is used for accommodation of stopped vehicles for emergency use and for lateral support of base and surface courses, and that is graded for emergency stopping. A shoulder might be paved or unpaved. A paved shoulder might be opened to part-time travel by some or all vehicles”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 66
  6. Question 6 of 10 · Following distance and space

View through your windshield of a straight dry road. A grey car is ahead in your lane, and a little way beyond it a small plain sign stands on a post at the right edge of the road. Your hood is at the bottom of the picture
What does reaching the sign before the end of your count mean?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: You are following too closely.

Reaching the sign before the end of the count means the gap is shorter than the count. Ease off the gas until the car ahead pulls away, then count again at the next pole. Most rear-end crashes come from following too closely, so this check is worth doing often.

“Rear-end crashes are very common and caused by drivers following too close.”

Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, page 71
  7. Question 7 of 10 · Warning signs

Five-sided bright yellow-green sign on a post at the right of a residential street, showing two black figures walking. Houses and lawns stand behind it. No people and no vehicles
Who should you expect near this sign?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: Children walking to school.

The five-sided sign is used for schools and nothing else. Its bright yellow-green face is kept for warnings about people. Expect children on foot and a crossing ahead, slow down, and do what a crossing guard tells you.

“Pentagon (upward-pointing)* School (S1-1) (squared bottom corners)**”

    MUTCD, 11th Edition, page 83
  8. Question 8 of 10 · Seat belts, airbags and car seats

The lap belt has ridden up onto your stomach. What should you do?
    Show the answer

The answer is A: Pull it down low over your hips.

The lap belt sits low and snug across your hips, where your hip bones can take the force. Across your stomach it has nothing solid to hold, so in a crash you can slide under it and be badly hurt. Check it every time you buckle up.

“designed to distribute force to the pelvic area and needs to sit properly on the upper thigh to accomplish this goal.”

Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, page 55
  9. Question 9 of 10 · Curves and hills

Two-lane road seen from above, bending to the right, with a double yellow line down its middle. Your car is at the bottom of the picture in the right-hand lane, centered in the lane on the straight just before the bend. The other lane is empty
Where should you drive through this curve?
    Show the answer

The answer is B: Toward the right of your lane.

Hold your lane through a curve, and on a right-hand bend keep toward the right of it. A driver coming the other way may be going too fast and drift over the center line toward you. Cutting across the line to straighten the curve puts you right in that driver's path.

“Keep slightly to the right of the lane center on right curves and in the middle of your lane on left curves.”

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual, page 55
  10. Question 10 of 10 · Highways, merging and exits

Highway seen from above. A short entrance ramp comes in from the right and ends straight at the edge of the right lane, with no extra lane running alongside. A yield sign stands at the end of the ramp. Your car is on the ramp near the sign, and cars are running in the through lanes at even spacing
May you merge from this ramp without slowing down?
    Show the answer

The answer is C: No. Yield. Stop if you need to.

This ramp has no acceleration lane, so there is no room to reach highway speed. That is why a yield sign stands at its end. Wait for a gap big enough to join from a slow start, stopping if you have to. Do not force your way into the traffic.

“When a YIELD sign is in place at an entrance ramp with no acceleration”
